Apples and strawberries, or how pollinators feed us

Thanks to the University of Maryland / Maryland Grows this informative article on how pollinators feed us.

You may have heard that pollinators are suffering. We need to support them so they can continue to stay around us. You may also have heard that as humans, we need pollinators. If we lose them, we also will lose our ability to feed ourselves. How is this so? In this blog post, I want to take some time to think about the importance of this. We will visit two examples of foods very familiar to us: apples and strawberries. Hopefully, by the end of this article, you will be sending loving thoughts to pollinators every time you take a bite of these delicious fruits.

Do apple trees need pollinators?

Get rid of leaves today, save your yard for tomorrow!

winter landscaping tips realtor

Leaves are almost finished falling and the holiday rush is on the way. Make time to remove those leaves! Doing so will help avoid a period of problems in the future. Last minute pruning is fine as well, especially before Christmas lights are strung.

July Gardens

After record breaking rainfall in June, this years weeds are out of control; both in the lawn and throughout the garden beds.  Even though it is getting warm, lawns are not stressed because of all the wet weather.  A second application of weed control is a good idea and can now be applied on turf.  As for your mulched areas, Round Up can be used to control most weeds.  When used properly, Round Up brand Post Emergent Weed Killer is very safe.  Its soil deactivated and will not leach.  This product  is much more effective that hand pulling weeds because it is a systemic and kills the root system.

June Garden Tips

There’s always something to be doing in the garden.

The dog days of summer can wreak havoc on your turf and drought intolerant plant material.  Water new plantings and turf every day unless it rains.  Continue watering the next day after the rain stops.  Cutting your lawn one half of an inch higher will allow the blades of grass to collect more morning dew.  Pruning this time of year not only keeps your plant material looking well kept but also gives a great opportunity to notice any unwanted pests or diseases.

April Garden Tips

April Showers Bring May Flowers so… lets Welcome Spring!!

Here are some garden tips from Dave Dix, my preferred landscape contractor:

This is often the time of year when people apply mulch to their garden beds.  Mulching helps to prevent weed growth and retain moisture around new plantings.  Use a granular, pre-emergent herbicide such as Preen to enhance weed control before applying mulch.
